Variety reports Weir wrote the script based on the memoir by Slavomir Rawicz. The film’s plot follows a group of soldiers who design an escape from a Siberian gulag in 1942.
If they sign for the film, Farrell will handle the role of a tattooed Russian; Harris will take on an American role; and Sturgess will take on the role of a Polish inmate. Ronan will handle the role of a Russian on the run who joins the escaping prisoners.
The film is scheduled to start shooting in March in Bulgaria, and will be financed through Spitfire Pictures. It will be the first time Weir was in the director’s chair since 2003's "Master and Commander."
“The Way Back” will be produced by Weir, Joni Levin, Duncan Henderson, Spitfire's Nigel Sinclair and Scott Rudin. Executive producing chores will be handled by Keith Clarke, John Ptak, Guy East, Simon Oakes and Jonathan Schwartz.
