Hossein Amini is set to pen a new Jack Ryan movie for Paramount Pictures – the first big screen adventure for Tom Clancy’s intelligence analyst since 2002's franchise reboot "The Sum of All Fears."
Mace Neufeld and Lorenzo Di Bonaventura are lined up to produce the new film for Paramount. Sam Raimi was attached to produce and direct the film, but left the project due to his busy commitments to other films, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
If the film makes it to theaters, it could give Paramount another franchise. The studio is already working on follow-ups to “Iron Man,” “Transformers,” and is hoping for big box office returns on other new franchises like “Star Trek” and “G.I. Joe.”
Amini’s story is reportedly an origin film for the Jack Ryan character and not based on one of Clancy’s novels.
"The Hunt for Red October" (the first big screen outing for Jack Ryan) featured Alec Baldwin as the character and earned $199 million worldwide in 1990. Harrison Ford took over the role with 1992’s "Patriot Games" (which earned $178 million worldwide) and 1994’s "Clear and Present Danger" (which brought in $208 million worldwide). Ben Affleck took on the role for 2002’s “Sum of All Fears." The film earned $177 million worldwide.
