Universal Pictures and Gore Verbinski are set to remake the 2006 Korean thriller “The Host.”
Korean thriller “The Host” gets remade by Universal and Gore Verbinski.
Variety reports the remake will be directed by Fredrik Bond (who will make his feature film debut) with Mark Poirier ("Smart People") writing the script. Bong Joon-ho directed the original film.
The film’s plot follows a town attacked by a giant creature mutated by toxins from a military base. The creature snatches a little girl, and her family have to work together to rescue her.
Verbinski is set to produce the remake with Vertigo's Roy Lee and Doug Davison. The film will also be produced by Paul Brooks. The original film (also known as "Gwoemul") broke box-office records in its South Korea theatrical run.
Bond’s directing experience includes commercial campaigns for Nike, Adidas and Levi's. He has been shopping for a project to do with Verbinski, and liked the idea of mixing a family drama with monster thriller.
In Variety, he stated: "It processes a few genres together, and visually it feels close to the stuff I've made over the last few years in commercials, the tonality of humor and the scale."
Verbinski has set the remake up through his Blind Wink Prods. - which he formed at Universal. He is also at work on a big screen adaptation of the hit video game "Bioshock."
