‘Beauty and the Beast’ gets a 3-D makeover

Disney has announced plans to give its animated film "Beauty and the Beast" a 3-D makeover and release the film in 2010. Disney will let the Beast roar again on the screen, but this time in 3-D.

Disney will let the Beast roar again on the screen, but this time in 3-D.Variety reports the film will be will be revamped using Disney Digital 3-D technology with the film’s original team (producer Don Hahn and co-directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale) overseeing the process with Sara Duran-Singer.The conversion to the 3-D format is expected to take nine months to complete, and an official release date has yet to be announced. Disney also has plans to bring “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2” to the 3-D format in 2009 and 2010.In Variety, Hahn stated: "By going back to the original animation files, which have been carefully archived for 17 years, and using the separate background, effects and character animation elements, we're able to come up with a fun and unique 3-D experience for existing and new fans of the film."Disney has an active release slate with 10 films expected to hit theaters between 2009 and 2010. The latest 3-D toon "Bolt" hits theaters this weekend.The films arriving in 2009 include "Jonas Brothers 3-D Concert Movie," Pixar's "Up," Jerry Bruckheimer's "G-Force," and Robert Zemeckis' "Disney's A Christmas Carol."2010’s schedule includes Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland," "Toy Story 3," "Rapunzel," and "Step Up 3."Disney will let the Beast roar again on the screen, but this time in 3-D.

Beauty and the Beast to be CGIed? Please say it isn't so? Why doesn't Disney concentrate on making new, original movies instead of remaking, sequelizing, CGIing and otherwise wrecking their classics?

Beauty and the Beast isn't going to be 'CGIed'. The term '3-D' in this article is speaking of Stereoscopic 3D, meaning the movie will be identical to its original release, except that you'll wear special glasses to watch it, making objects on screen appear as though they have depth.
