Law is said to be close to signing for the role of Dr. Watson, Holmes’ assistant in his various investigations, according to information in Variety.
The film is produced by Joel Silver, Lionel Wigram, Susan Downey and Dan Lin. Shooting is scheduled to start next month in London, and the film’s plot will use elements from the classic Sir Arthur Conan Doyle tales and the "Sherlock Holmes" comic books.
The studio is still casting other principal roles - including the film’s main villain, Blackwood.
Law has finished up work on Terry Gilliam’s upcoming "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," and will star in the Universal drama "Repossession Mambo" with Forest Whitaker.
