Universal bringing ‘Sigmund and the Sea Monsters’ to the big screen

Universal has inked a deal to bring a live-action adaption of Sid and Marty Krofft’s ’70s children’s series "Sigmund and the Sea Monsters" to the big screen.

Variety reports the film will be produced by the Kroffts with Jimmy Miller. Julie Darmody is set to handle executive producing chores. Dana Gould (“The Simpsons”) has been hired to pen the “Sigmund” adaptation.

The deal follows Universal and Mosaic’s big screen adaptation of “Land of the Lost” – which had a budget estimated at $100 million and stars Will Ferrell.

"Land of the Lost" was another series handled by the Kroffts, and will arrive in theaters in June.

"Sigmund" is the latest Krofft brothers television series to receive the Hollywood treatment.

Sony is at work developing a live-action adaptation of "H.R. Pufnstuff" with Conrad Vernon ("Shrek 2" and "Monsters vs. Aliens") in talks to direct. 

"Sigmund" aired on NBC from 1973-75, and had a long life in reruns. The series followed a sea monster who becomes friends with two boys after his mean brothers make him leave home.
