Bond gets bumped

In the wake of the next “Harry Potter” film being delayed until 2009, MGM has pushed the next Bond adventure, “Quantum of Solace,” back a week. The studio has announced the film will now open on Nov. 14th rather than the planned Nov. 7th.

Variety reports the Bond franchise has traditionally had Thanksgiving openings, but Sony had scheduled an early November release to avoid 007 going head to head with the boy wizard.After Warner Bros. pulled “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Price,” Sony shifted the new Bond film back to a more holiday friendly opening. Summit Entertainment has also shifted teen vampire story, “Twilight” to Nov. 21st.In Variety, Sony chairman of worldwide marketing and distribution stated: "We believe Nov. 14 is a great date that allows us to play straight through Thanksgiving and right into Christmas. We believe this decision will give the public a wider opportunity to see the film over the holiday."Bond’s move has also caused ripple effects with other films. Universal moved the R-rated comedy "Role Models" to now open on Nov. 7th.The new release date will put “Quantum of Solace” in competition with 20th Century Fox's epic "Australia" from director Baz Luhrmann with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman; Overture's "Nothing Like the Holidays"; and MGM comedy "Soul Men" – with the late Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes.
