Tom Cruise’s ‘Valkyrie’ shifted back to 2008

On the heels of Paula Wagner announcement that she would leave United Artists, the Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner produced World War II film “Valkyrie” has been shifted back to the 2008 film slate and will be released on Dec. 26th.

Variety reports the MGM film was scheduled to be released on Feb. 13th, 2009, but was changed for commercial reasons.The decision was reportedly made following a screening of the film by studio heads. MGM feels the Bryan Singer movie could do well during the holiday season. The decision to change the date was not made to give the film more time for awards consideration.Based on actual events, “Valkyrie” follows a plot to assassinate Hitler during the height of WWII. Tom Cruise plays Col. Claus von Stauffenberg - who put a bomb under a table in a building at the Wolf's Lair (Hitler's secret base in the woods near what is Ketrzyn in contemporary Poland). Hitler survived the blast and within days many of those involved in the plot on his life were rounded up. Stauffenberg is revered in Germany as a national hero for his July 20, 1944 bid to kill the Nazi dictator.
