George Clooney has picked up the screen rights to Jonathan Mahler's thriller "The Challenge" – which follows U.S. Navy lawyer Charles Swift and Georgetown law professor Neal Katyal attempt to ensure a fair trial for Osama bin Laden’s bodyguard and driver Salim Hamdan.
Variety reports the film will be worked through Clooney and Grant Heslov's Smoke House company and the deal was reportedly in the seven-figure range. The project could be a written and directed by Clooney – who could also star in the film.
On Aug. 7th, a panel of military officers at Guantanamo Bay sentenced Hamdan to 66 months in prison – including time served. Hamdan was convicted of material support for terrorism. He was found innocent of the conspiracy to commit murder charge – which was seen as a victory for Swift.
