Angelina Jolie in Universal Pictures\' "Wanted"
“Edwin A. Salt" is set to become a woman and her name could be Angelina Jolie. The long in development Columbia Pictures spy thriller is set to have yet another redraft of the script that will replace Tom Cruise and make the film a vehicle for Jolie.
Variety reports Kurt Wimmer is penning a new version of the film which will still be directed by Philip Noyce and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Sunil Perkash.
Jolie is still in talks to play the title character - a CIA officer accused of being a Russian sleeper spy. Salt then goes on the run in an attempt to prove her innocence.
Following Cruise’s departure from the film, Jolie reportedly express interest in the script – which helped the studio make a decision to rewrite it to fit a female character. Thanks to films like “Wanted” (which grossed $132 million domestically), Jolie is considered a bankable actress who can carry a film on her shoulders.
If she signs for the film, "Edwin A. Salt" will likely have a title change, and could mark her return to the screen following her giving birth to twins. She is also considering the Lionsgate drama "Atlas Shrugged" – based on the Ayn Rand novel and adapted by Randall Wallace.
