Venom spinoff in the works for Sony

Cover art from Marvel Comics' Mighty Avengers Vol. 2: Venom BombJacob Estes (“Mean Creek”) was hired several years ago to pen a screenplay for a Venom film, but Sony is now shopping the idea to other writers for a new direction for the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.There is also no word if Topher Grace (who became Venom towards the end of “Spider-Man 3”) would return to the role. In the comics, Venom is an alien parasite that attaches itself to Spider-Man before splitting off to become a bad guy with Eddie Brock.Since “Spider-Man 3” changed several aspects of the character for the film, Sony could move the character further away from his comic roots for the new spin-off. The studio is also at work on a fourth “Spider-Man” film expected to hit theaters in 2011.
