Harold and Kumar headed for a third trip

Photo date: 21 July 2004 Photo by Sophie Giraud - © 2004 New Line Productions.Variety reports the duo (who wrote "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle" and "Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay") will return to write and direct the third installment for Mandate Pictures. The film will also have Greg Shapiro return as a producer.The film’s plot is being kept secret, but stars John Cho and Kal Penn are expected to return to their roles as the pot smoking duo. Mandate had the actors sign options for a third film in the series.Warner Bros. is expected to distribute the third film now that New Line (who released the first two films) has been folded into the studio. In Variety, Mandate prexy Nathan Kahane stated: "Thanks to Jon and Hayden, the Harold and Kumar movies pushed envelopes, broke boundaries and connected with fans," he said. "We are so grateful to be back in business with Jon, Hayden and Greg."The first Harold and Kumar pulled in $18 million domestically at the box office in 2004, but went on to earn more than $30 million in DVD sales. The sequel cost $12 million to make, and took in $38 million at the box office. It hits DVD on Tuesday, July 29th.
