New Line Cinema has inked a deal with John Waters to write a treatment for a sequel to 2007’s hit musical “Hairspray.”
John Travolta as Edna Turnblad and Nicole Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad in 2007's "Hairspray."
Variety reports the sequel will once again feature director/choreographer Adam Shankman, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and the song-writing team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman – who are expected to write new tunes for the film.
The plot would follow the Turnblad family again and pick up where the first film ended. Waters has signed to write a treatment for the film, but the studio has yet to hire a writer for the film’s screenplay.
The film’s stars did not sign sequel options and so far have not been approached to appear in the follow-up. The studio reportedly is interested in bringing some of the original cast back for the sequel – which will be released by Warner Bros. in mid-July, 2010.
"Hairspray" managed to take in more than $200 million worldwide and had strong sales on the DVD and soundtrack markets. The film featured John Travolta (dressed up in a fat suit and wig for the role of Edna), Christopher Walken and Nikki Blonsky.
It also had supporting roles from Zac Efron, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, James Marsden, Amanda Bynes, Elijah Kelley and Allison Janney.
