Phillip Noyce in talks for Tom Cruise’s ‘Salt’
By Patrick Luce Jul 1, 2008, 13:46 GMT
Phillip Noyce is in talks to handle directing duties on Columbia Pictures new spy flick "Edwin A. Salt" – which is in development with Tom Cruise lined up to star.
Variety reports the film is based on a script from Kurt Wimmer and is being produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Sunil Perkash.
Cruise has yet to fully commit to the film, but his name has been attached as Wimmer turned in various drafts of the film for past directors attached to the project – including Terry George and Peter Berg.
The film follows a CIA officer (Cruise) accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy. The accusation forces him to avoid capture long enough to clear his name.
Cruise will return to the screen this summer with a small role in the Ben Stiller comedy “Tropic Thunder.” He will also appear in Bryan Singer-directed World War II flick "Valkyrie" for United Artists.
If Noyce signs to the film, it will mark his return to the world of spies. Noyce handled directing duties on the Jack Ryan films "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger." His last feature film was "Catch a Fire."
