Rose McGowan is the new Red Sonja

Nu Image/Millennium Films has announced Rose McGowan will return the mythical flame-haired comic-book vixen with a sword Red Sonja to the screen. Executive producing duties are handled by Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short, Luke Lieberman and Nick Barrucci. “This is an amazing property and film for our company,” stated Nu Image/Millennium’s Avi Lerner in a press release. ”Working with the talented Robert Rodriguez, having Rose McGowan as Red Sonja and Douglas Aarniokoski directing is a fantastic combination. We could not be happier.”The film is based on the character created by Robert E. Howard (who brought Conan the Barbarian to life) and was adapted for Marvel Comics by Roy Thomas. The screenplay is from David White. The film will follow Sonja as she goes from a victim of tragedy to become one of the most feared female warriors of all time. She will embark on a quest for vengeance on those who destroyed her family, and discover it is up to her to save Hyrkania from the villainous Kulan Gath.“It is our intent to take this opportunity to build on the worlds of branded entertainment with Red Sonja as well as Conan, Hercules and The Three Musketeers titles. There is history with these mythical heroes, and success,” stated Millennium’s Boaz Davidson in the same release. “We were pleased when Joe Gatta brought us this project.”

The film is set to start production in October with locations being scouted in Michigan and throughout the United States.
