Universal has announced Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Bruno” will arrive in theaters at the start of the 2009 summer season with a May 15th release date. As of now, it is the only R-rated comedy scheduled for release around this date.
Variety reports the title character Bruno is one of three characters Cohen perfected during his television series “Da Ali G Show” – which also gave birth to Borat.
Bruno is Cohen’s take on a flashy fashion and celebrity reporter. The character comes from Austria and interviews the unsuspecting public – who actually believe Bruno is a real person.
Universal is banking Cohen will be popular enough to make “Bruno” a summer blockbuster. The theory is backed by the $128.5 million domestic haul Twentieth Century Fox made from “Borat.”
