Spike Lee is set to co-write and direct the screen adaptation of Ronald Mallett’s memoir “Time Traveler: A Scientist's Personal Mission to Make Time Travel a Reality.” Mallett was one of the nation’s first African-Americans to earn a Ph.D in theoretical physics.

Variety reports Lee picked up the rights to the book with his own money and will finance the production through his Forty Acres & A Mule Filmworks.
Mallett wrote the memoir with Bruce Henderson, and it chronicles his journey from poverty to a distinguished career in his field. The book also discusses the plans needed for what Mallett believes would be a workable time machine.
Mallett has been interested in time travel and building a time machine since the age of 10 when his father died. His goal with time travel would be to go back in time and prevent his father’s death.
In Variety, Lee described “Time Traveler” as a “fantastic story on many levels (and) also a father and son saga of loss and love.”
Lee just finished directing chores on his upcoming drama “Miracle at St. Anna” – which is based on a novel that follows the members of the U.S. Army's 92nd Division. The film will be hitting theaters this fall through Touchstone Pictures.
