Variety reports the film is being co-financed by Universal Pictures and Columbia Pictures. Universal will handle distributing the film worldwide next summer.
Apatow (who wrote and directed “Knocked Up”) has been quiet about what the new film will be about, but has said it follows a standup comedian who has a new-death experience.
“Funny People” is a co-production between Apatow Prods. and Happy Madison. In addition to writing and directing, Apatow will also serve as a producer on the film with Clayton Townsend and Barry Mendel.
Jack Giarraputo, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are handling executive producing duties.
The film is set to start production in mid-September with shooting taking place in Los Angeles.
