The Hollywood Reporter has revealed Glover is in talks to play the president with Newton eyeing the role of his daughter and Platt in discussion for the role of the president’s chief of staff.
John Cusack and Chiwetel Ejiofor have already signed for the film – which is based on a script Emmerich wrote with Harald Kloser (who also worked with the director on 10,000 BC).
Emmerich will also serve as an executive producer on the film with Michael Wimmer and Ute Emmerich.
In addition to his writing duties, Kloser will serve as a producer on the film with Mark Gordon and Larry Franco.
The epic movie follows a global disaster and the struggles of the people who survive. The film has an estimated $200 million budget, but Columbia has stated the film would be made for less.
Columbia is looking to have the film in theaters on July 10, 2009, and filming is scheduled to start in July.
