Magnolia Pictures picks up The Great Buck Howard

Magnolia Pictures, a Wagner/Cuban company, has picked up the North American rights to Bristol Bay Productions and Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s Playtone Pictures’ The Great Buck Howard – which made a splash at this year’s Sundance.

“The Great Buck Howard is a rare find in the current marketplace—a charming, incredibly likeable film that has something for everyone,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “John Malkovich's performance is really outstanding."The deal was negotiated by Magnolia Pictures Senior Vice President, Tom Quinn and Head of Business Affairs, Jason Janego with Dan Steinman of CAA, and Jim Meenaghan of Bristol Bay, Executive Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs.“We’re happy to be partnering with Magnolia. They’re the perfect distributor for this unique film because they truly understand the audience we need to reach and how we can connect with them,” said Cary Granat, Co-CEO of Bristol Bay. The film was directed by Sean McGinley, and features an ensemble cast including John Malkovich, Colin Hanks, Emily Blunt, Tom Hanks, Steve Zahn, Griffin Dunne and Jay Leno.In the film, Malkovich takes on the role of the eponymous Buck Howard - a faded mentalist who in his prime was a marquee act in Vegas and was featured 61 times on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show. Howard has fallen on hard times and now spends his days performing in community centers and decaying theaters across the heartland. Colin Hanks stars as disillusioned law student Troy Gable who takes a job as Howard’s road manager against his father’s (Tom Hanks) wishes. With a little help from his beautiful publicist (Emily Blunt) and a bold stroke of fate, Buck begins to find himself back in the limelight, and becomes the unlikeliest of teachers for Gable as he learns a few tricks he couldn’t possibly have picked up in law school.Magnolia has announced plans to for a fall theatrical rollout for The Great Buck Howard.
