Highlander remake in the works

Summit Entertainment has announced plans to produce a remake of the cult classic fantasy film Highlander with hopes the remake will launch a new franchise.

Variety reports Summit has hired the Iron Man writing team of Art Marcum and Matt Holloway to pen a new screenplay for the film – which will see the original story expanded. The company is looking to start shooting the film in 2009.The new film will be a mix of contemporary settings, action, mythology and medieval Scotland, according to Summit production prexy Erik Feig. Summit picked up the remake rights to Highlander from Davis/Panzer Prods. and will have Peter Davis (who produced the original film) serve as a producer on the Highlander remake.Highlander hit the big screen in 1986 and was directed by Russell Mulcahy. The film starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, Clancy Brown and Roxanne Hart. It became a successful franchise with four sequels and three TV spinoffs.The film followed a group of immortals who battled each other for the right to claim a mysterious prize.
