Production still from 1991’s Point Break - now available in a Special Edition Blu-ray and Pure Adrenaline Edition DVD
A sequel to 1991’s action-packed Point Break is in the works with Jan de Bont set to direct and original writer W. Peter Iliff handling writing duties.
The sequel is entitled Point Break: Indo and is scheduled to be released through RGM Entertainment and Essential Entertainment, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Point Break was directed by Kathryn Bigelow and featured Keanu Reeves as FBI agent Johnny Utah who goes undercover as a surfer to bust a gang of bank robbers dubbed the Ex-Presidents.
The gang was lead by the surf guru Bodhi (played by Patrick Swayze) who seduced Johnny with his free lifestyle and pursuit of the ultimate high.
The film ended with Bodhi riding a gigantic wave off the South Australian coast during a 50-year storm and leaving the story wide open for a sequel.
The IESB reports the sequel takes place two decades later and follows star surfer and military special ops soldier Billy Dalton. When he is kicked off the pro-surfing tour, he takes off for the coast of Bali in search of that perfect wave.
While he is there, Dalton is recruited by a private security force that is trying to take down a gang of surfing outlaws known as The Bush Administration. The gang works just like The Ex-Presidents did twenty years ago.
Shooting is scheduled to take place in Singapore and Southeast Asia. There has been no word if the film will feature an appearance from Reeves or Swayze (who is battling pancreatic cancer).
