Nicolas Cage has signed to star in an updated version of the 1992 cop drama Bad Lieutenant – which starred Harvey Keitel and received an NC-17 rating.
Variety reports the new film will be directed by Werner Herzog and produced by Edward R. Pressman. Avi Lerner's Nu Image/Millennium Films is lined up to handle financing.
The film (which will also be titled Bad Lieutenant) is scheduled to be announced at Cannes with a production date set for the late summer.
The original film was produced by Pressman and was directed by Abel Ferrara. It featured a screenplay from Ferrara and Zoe Lund. The film’s plot followed a depraved New York police officer who was heavily involved with drugs, gambling, sex and stealing.
The updated version of the story was written by Billy Finkelstein ("Murder One," "Law & Order" and "NYPD Blue").
Cage is currently at work filming Knowing in Australia with director Alex Proyas. Herzog's is lined up to follow Bad Lieutenant with The Piano Tuner for Focus.
