Mel Gibson is set to star in new movie 'Edge of Darkness'.
The 52-year-old actor will play a police investigator in the big-screen adaptation of the 1985 TV mini-series, which was broadcast on the BBC.
It is Gibson's first starring role since 2002 movies 'Signs' and 'We Were Soldiers'. He then directed 2004's 'The Passion of the Christ' and 'Apocalypto' in 2006.
In the movie, Gibson's character uncovers systemic corruption while investigating the death of his activist daughter.
The 'Mad Max' star has always been a fan of the mini-series and was keen to sign up when producer Graham King and director Martin Campbell approached him several months ago.
Shooting on the independently financed project begins in Boston in August.
In 2006, Gibson was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) near his Californian home.
During the incident, he yelled to police officers that Jewish people were "responsible for all the wars in the world".
He soon apologised, met with Jewish leaders, and underwent treatment for alcoholism.
He is currently also serving a three-year probation term.
