Zack Snyder has signed to direct the animated feature film Guardians of Ga'Hoole - based on the series of children's books by Kathryn Lasky.

Variety reports Village Roadshow is handling the film’s production with Warner Bros. set to distribute. The screenplay is written by John Orloff ("A Mighty Heart") and John Collee ("Master and Commander"). The film (which is the first animated film for Snyder) is set to be produced by Zareh Nalbandian, with Donald DeLine, Deborah Snyder and Lionel Wigram executive producing.

Guardians of Ga'Hoole is set in the Forest of Tyto, where Barn Owls live in peace until their kingdom is threatened by an evil that could destroy their home.

The project is on the fast track and will likely hit theaters by 2009 or 2010.

It should be a fantastic movie, if they don't screw it up like they did with Eragon.
