Paramount Vantage has picked up the Sudhir Venkatesh book "Gang Leader for a Day" and tapped Craig Brewer to direct and "Sopranos" writer Michael Caleo to handle the screen adapation.
Variety reports Stephanie Allain (who worked with Brewer on Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan) will produce the adaptation.
Venkatesh is a Columbia U. professor, and his novel followed the years he spent chronicling a crack-dealing gang in Chicago.
During the research, Venkatesh befriended the Black Kings and their leader. This allowed him to observe the gang’s activities up close and reflect in his novel a close-knit group with a corporate culture similar to legitimate businesses. He was also given the chance to run the gang's criminal enterprise for a day.
