Dr Seuss' Horton captures hearts of US moviegoers

New York - A lovable elephant based on a classic children's book by Dr Seuss captured the hearts of US moviegoers over the weekend.

The animated film, Horton Hears a Who, brought in 45 million dollars in its opening weekend to top the box office charts. The film from the makers of Ice Age features the voice of Jim Carrey as Horton, an elephant who discovers a miniature world on a speck of dust populated by tiny people called Whos and vows to protect them. Comedian Steve Carell provides the voice of the mayor of Whoville. Director Roland Emmerich's 10,000 BC, a story of a prehistoric mammoth hunter, slid from first to second place with 16.4 million dollars. In third place was fight club drama Never Back Down with 8.6 million dollars. College Road Trip, a comedy starring Martin Lawrence that has been panned by critics took fourth place with 7.9 million dollars, followed by political thriller Vantage Point with 5.4 million dollars.
