Disney has tapped writer/actor Jason Segel and director Nick Stoller to bring the Muppets back to the big screen. The duo will write the screenplay for the film with Stoller set to direct it.
Variety reports Segel (who stars in CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother”) got his break on “Freaks and Geeks” and “Undeclared.” His first sole writing credit is the Apatow-produced Forgetting Sarah Marshall – which is being released on April 18th through Universal and was directed by Stoller.
In Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Segel’s character writes a musical adaptation of Dracula which is performed by puppets. The puppets in the film were made by the Henson puppeteers. The experience led Segel to pitch a concept for a new Muppets movie to Disney with Stoller enlisted to co-write and direct the film.
