Jamal 'Gravy' Woolard is Notorious B.I.G.

After a long casting search, Fox Searchlight has signed Jamal ‘Gravy’ Woolard for the role of Notorious B.I.G. in the studio’s upcoming biopic Notorious – which will chronicle the life of the slain rapper. Angela Bassett, Derek Luke and Anthony Mackie have also signed on to star in the film. Cover art from the 'Born Again' album

Cover art from the 'Born Again' albumVariety reports George Tillman Jr. will direct the film from a screenplay by Cheo Hodari Coker and Reggie Rock Bythewood. The production is set to start shooting on March 24 in all five boroughs of New York. Antonique Smith, Naturi Naughton, Dennis White and Julia Pace Mitchell are also featured in the film.Notorious is being produced by Wayne Barrow, Mark Pitts, Bob Teitel and Trish Hofmann. Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is executive producing. The film has a Jan. 16th release date.The film will follow the life of Christopher Wallace (Notorious B.I.G.) as he goes from his beginnings as a Brooklyn crack dealer to one of the world’s biggest hip-hop icons. His murder has never been solved.Bassett has signed to play his mother, Voletta Wallace; Luke will handle the role of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs (who was in the car when Biggie was killed); and Mackie will handle the role of fellow hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur.
