Ryan Reynolds will star in upcoming blockbuster 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine'.

The 31-year-old star has reportedly signed up to play legendary comic-book villain Deadpool in the highly-anticipated movie alongside Australian actor Hugh Jackman.

A source said: "Fans were excited by rumours the film would feature Deadpool because he's a legendary villain for Marvel comics readers. So they'll be delighted to know Ryan's going to play him.

"Deadpool is a mentally unstable mercenary, with special healing powers just like Wolverine's. He is full of funny one-liners and wisecracks. It's just the sort of thing Ryan is great at."

Ryan - who will don Deadpool's trademark tight red costume for the role - recently admitted he is partial to wearing a "red onesie".

Speaking about the possibility of playing superhero The Flash in another project, he said: "I've been known to wear red unitards at various parties around town, so I'm in."

'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' is scheduled for release in 2009.
