Rambo out-muscled by spoof Spartans

New York - A Hollywood spoof based on one of last year's most violent movies out-muscled a film described as among the most violent action films ever made.

Meet the Spartans, which lampoons a host of Hollywood movies topped by the Greek-Persian war epic 300, deputed atop the weekend box-office rankings with three-day ticket sales of 18.7 million dollars, according to preliminary studio estimates issued Sunday. Rambo, the fourth installment in Sylvester Stallone's action series, opened with 18.2 million dollars in revenue from the Friday- Sunday period. The movie brings back the title character, a US veteran of the Vietnam War, to battle the Burmese Army in defence of the Karen ethnic minority. The weekend's other new movie, internet murder thriller Untraceable starring Diane Lane, rounded up 11.2 million dollars in gross revenue. © 2008 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
