Conan finds life with Lionsgate deal

Lionsgate has inked a North American distribution rights deal with Nu Image/Millennium Film for a new series of films based on Robert E. Howard’s pulp creation Conan the Barbarian. It will be produced by Avi Lerner, Boaz Davidson, Joe Gatta, Paradox Entertainment's Fredrick Malmberg (who made a seven-figure deal with Millennium after declining to renew Warner Bros.' option on Conan), George Furla and Henry Winterstern. In Daily Variety, Lerner stated he was looking at making a WGA deal similar to what has been done with United Artists and the Weinstein Co. which he hoped would speed up the production.He stated: "It's a possibility, though I haven't studied it enough to make a final decision. The whole strike is stupid, in my opinion. They approached us, indirectly, to make some kind of deal, and we are looking at it."Though the barbarian first slashed his way onto the big screen in the 80’s with current California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Conan continues to be a strong property – where he has life in the pages of Dark Horse Comics, a Xbox 360 game, and a Funcom/Eidos multiplayer online role-playing game that was showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
