British actor Sacha Baron Cohen has signed on for the role of Abbie Hoffman for director Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film about the trial of the Chicago Seven. The film has been in development through DreamWorks and could be set to be Spielberg’s next project.
London’s Sunday Times reported Cohen (who just appeared in DreamWorks Sweeney Todd) has been attached for the Hoffman role and the film would follow the group of anti-Vietnam War activists through their arrest at the 1968 Democratic Convention. Spielberg’s people have yet to confirm or deny the report.
Variety has reported DreamWorks has signed Aaron Sorkin to tackle script duties and the project is set for a July start. Spielberg will also handle producing duties with Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald.
