Peter Berg is in talks to direct Columbia’s upcoming spy thriller Edwin A. Salt. Tom Cruise is attached to star in the film - which has been eyed by several directors including Michael Mann and Terry George.
Berg is said to have met with Cruise on two occasions during the past couple of weeks for discussions about the film’s script, and could be looking to make Salt his next project. He was lined up to tackle Lone Survivor for Universal, but the screenplay needs additional work, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Columbia is hoping to get Salt out to the big screen by the summer, but the strike and guild negotiations could interrupt shooting dates.
The film was written by Kurt Wimmer, and follows a CIA officer named Edwin A. Salt who is accused of being a Russian sleeper spy. Salt has to avoid getting captured by superiors in the CIA (who are convinced that he is out to assassinate the president) while trying to find the true traitor. Lorenzo Di Bonaventura is handling producing duties on the film.
