New York - Will Smith's role as the last person on Earth in I Am Legend brought in moviegoers, earning 76.5 million dollars at the box office to become the weekend's top grossing film.
Executives at Warner Brothers Pictures said Sunday the earnings were the biggest ever for the premiere of a Smith film. Last year, his The Pursuit of Happyness led the box office for the same weekend, but earned just 26.5 million dollars.
Alvin and the Chipmunks starring Jason Lee as a struggling music producer alongside three computer-animated rodents was the weekend's second-highest grossing film, earning 45 million dollars.
Fantasy film The Golden Compass, starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, brought in 9 million dollars in its second week to claim third place. The earnings were down signficantly from an opening of 41 million dollars.
