Director Michael Mann has nabbed Johnny Depp to step into John Dillinger’s shoes for Universal’s Public Enemies.
Variety reports the Mann and Depp shook hands on the deal before the premiere of Depp’s Sweeny Todd and the film will start production March 10th in Chicago.
The film will be set in the great gangster era of the 1930s and will follow the government’s attempt to stop Depression-era criminal elements - such as Dillilnger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. It will also focus on J. Edgar Hoover’s transforming the FBI to deal with a national crime wave. The script was written by Mann based on Bryan Burrough’s 2004 book.
Mann and his Forward Pass will produce the film with Kevin Misher and his Misher Films. Executive duties will be handled by Tribeca’s Jane Rosenthal.
The director has been juggling several upcoming projects, but Public Enemies gained a foothold when Depp became available. The actor was caught with a hole in his schedule following Warner Bros. postponement of Shantaram.
