Variety reports the film is scheduled to start shooting in March and is being produced by Phoenix Pictures, Scorsese's Sikelia Prods. and DiCaprio's Appian Way. Scorsese is also scheduled to handle producing duties with Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer, and Brad Fischer. In addition to supervising production of the film, Paramount is scheduled to handle North American distribution. Columbia is set to handle international distribution.
Shutter Island’s screenplay (which is an adaptation of Dennis Lehane's 2004 novel) was written by Laeta Kalogridis.
The film’s plot follows two U.S. marshals who travel to the Massachusetts island in 1954 to investigate the disappearance of a patient from a hospital for the criminally insane. As the investigation unfolds, the two are trapped on the island, encounter lies, a hurricane and an inmate riot.
Shutter Island will mark the first time Kingsley has teamed with Scorsese. The actor is currently shooting The Love Guru, a comedy with Mike Myers.
