Jake Gyllenhaal is Joe Namath

Universal Pictures has announced Jake Gyllenhaal will take the field to portray NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath in a feature film based on his life story.

Variety reports David Hollander is set to handle the screenplay (after the writers strike is settled) with Mad Chance's Andrew Lazar producing and Jimmy Walsh executive producing. Jake Gyllenhaal - 2nd Rome Film Festival - 'Rendition' Movie Premiere - Red Carpet - Auditorium Parco della Musica - Rome, Italy © Insidefoto / PR PhotosWalsh and Namath signed off on the film following a long courtship by Lazar, a solid pitch on the story from Hollander, and the casting of Gyllenhaal – who is considered the right actor to bring Namath’s story to the screen.The film will follow Namath’s rise from a kid in Beaver Falls, Pa., to the legendary New York Jets quarterback with the nickname Broadway Joe. It will also cover how Namath obtained “rock star” status as a quarterback and became a '60s cultural figure.
