Gong Li heads to Shanghai

The Weinstein Co. has signed Gong Li for the upcoming period drama Shanghai, and is in negotiations with John Cusack to join the project. The studio has announced plans to shoot the film in China with production scheduled for early 2008. Phoenix Pictures’ Mike Medavoy and Barry Mendel are planned for producing duties with Arnie Messer handling executive producing.If signed, Cusack will plan an American who returns to a corrupt, Japanese-occupied Shanghai four months before Pearl Harbor and discovers his friend has been killed. While searching for the who was responsible, he falls in love and stumbles on a larger secret involving his own government.
