Redford hits out at Bush administration after film screening

Berlin - Hollywood star Robert Redford hit out at the Bush administration and the war in Iraq ahead of the release of his new film in Germany next week.

Redford accused President George W Bush's administration of incompetence, during a panel discussion after a special screening of Lions for Lambs in Berlin on Wednesday evening. The veteran actor directed the anti-war thriller and stars in it alongside Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep. Redford accused the US administration of spreading fear among the population through its war on terror launched after the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States. 'That is inexcusable,' the Oscar-winning filmmaker told his audience, complaining how 'unbearable' it was to witness what had happened to American values in the past six years. Redford said the Bush administration believed that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and used that as an excuse to go to war. 'The problem is, they were incompetent,' he said. Lions for Lambs deals in three episodes with US involvement in the war in Afghanistan and also explores the issue of media freedom versus political power. Cruise and his wife, Katie Holmes, were present at the screening. The actor has recently finished shooting his own film in Germany, a war movie about a plot to kill Hitler, called Valkyrie. Lions for Lambs opens in German cinemas on November 8. The movie was shown out of competition at the Rome film festival this week where it received a lukewarm response from Italian critics In the discussion after the Berlin screening, former German foreign minister Joschka Fischer took issue with current US policies. 'America has lost its political sense and placed its trust in the military,' he said.
