Haifa - An Israeli-French co-production starring French actress Juliette Binoche is to open Israel's 23rd Haifa Film Festival, the festival reported Wednesday.
The festival, which starts Thursday, is celebrating its largest number of films from Israel and the world with 154 films showing. Organizers expect as many as 60,000 people to visit the screenings, which take place during the Jewish festival of tabernacles (Succoth).
The film Disengagement directed by Israel's Amos Gitai tells the story of an Israeli-born woman who returns from abroad to search for the daughter she abandoned as a baby 20 years prior.
Overshadowing the film's depiction of the story of search and self-discovery is Israel's 2005 withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, known domestically as the disengagement.
Binoche, who rose to fame in films by Jean-Luc Godard and Louis Malle and was last seen in the Anthony Minghella's Breaking and Entering, is expected at the premiere in Israel's northern port city.
