Despite mixed reviews, Jodie Foster's "The Brave One" eked to the top spot of the U.S. box office. Making a reported $13.5 million for a lower than expected weekend. The box office performance had veteran Hollywood Reporter Nikki Finke offer props for Foster, claiming she "remains one of the few Hollywood actresses still able to open a pic these days."

Number 2 spot went to Lionsgate's western, "3:10 To Yuma," which got great reviews and solid leads like Christian Bale and Russell Crowe, as well as "Walk the Line" director Jim Mangold. The film made $9.2 million for a new total of $28.5 million. Number 3 went to New Line's PG-13 "Mr. Woodcock" that made $8.6 million Friday through Sunday. Finke also noted why in the world would Susan Sarandon take on such a dismally executed, conceptualized and reviewed project. Number 4 was "Superbad," earning $5.2 million this weekend for a new total of $111.3 million. Number 5 went to The Weinstein Co / MGM's Rob Zombie directed "Hallowee" which made $5.1 million with a new total after 3 weeks of $51.4 million. Number 6 was Freestyle's "Dragon Wars" witht $5.1 million.Number 7 was the film "The Bourne Ultimatum" enjoying its 7th week in release. Making $4.2 million, the new total is $216.2 million Number 8 was New Line's hit "Rush Hour 3" took in $3.3 million for the weekend, for a new total of $133.1 million. Number 9 went to Focus Features comedy "Balls Of Fury" was 9th, making $3.3 million for a new tally of $28.8 million. Number 10 was Universal's "Mr. Bean's Holiday" that made $2.6 million this weekend.Limited release film news - the newcomers that platformed this weekend. Focus Features' "Eastern Promises" received rave reviews and lead Viggo Mortensen is being heralded as an early Oscar favorite. The film stars Naomi Watts and Mortensen under the direction of David Cronenberg. The film was screened in 14 theaters and raked in the best per screen average: between $11,000 and $14,500 each weekend night. The Paul Haggis film "The Valley Of Elah" starring Tommy Lee Jones and Charlize Theron which Warner Independent played in 9 venues also performed well.
