Lust, Caution won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday. Taiwanese Premier Chang Chun-hsiung and Government Information Office (GIO) Minister Shieh Jhy-wey congratulated Lee, a Taiwanese now residing in the United States.
The GIO will issue a cash award to Lee for winning the top prize at an international film festival. Lee and his production company wil each receive 10 million Taiwan dollars (300,000 US dollars).
If Lee directs another Chinese-language film within two years, GIO will cover half of the costs but the subsidy will not exceed 80 million Taiwan dollars (2.4 million US dollars).
The cash prize was set up by GIO to promote Taiwan's film industry.
Ang Lee was born in Tainan, south Taiwan, and went to study film making at New York University when he was 23. Now a US citizen, Lee takes pride his Taiwanese roots and visits Taiwan from time to time.
