'Sweeney Todd' set for Dec. 21 release

DreamWorks and Paramount have set a December 21st release date for Tim Burton's adaptation of musical 'Sweeney Todd.'
Johnny Depp plays the lead Sweeney Todd, Helena Bonham Carter is cast as Mrs. Lovett, and Sacha Baron Cohen will play Signor Adolfo Pirelli.
Burton's "Todd" is based on the Stephen Sondheim Broadway musical.
Alan Rickman will play the lecherous Judge Turpin in the film. He imprisons Benjamin Barker who later returns as barber Sweeney Todd and takes revenge.
Variety reports the studios were originally planning on a small release, expanding in January. However, after seeing some clips they reckon Depp's performance will give the movie wider appeal.
