New Harry Potter film breaks records in Australia
Jul 12, 2007, 13:22 GMT
Sydney - The new Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, has outsold it four predecessors, taking 4 million Australian dollars (3.3 million US dollars) on its first day of screenings in Australian cinemas, its distributor said Thursday.
The last one in the series, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, took 3.2 million Australian dollars on its opening day on December 1, 2005.
The new film is the fifth biggest opening day in Australian cinema box office history, behind the three Lord of the Rings films and The Matrix Reloaded.
The latest Harry Potter film is out less than two weeks before the publication of the final book in J K Rowling's seven-part series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
The latest Harry Potter film broke records Wednesday when it opened in the United States. It took at the box office almost twice the takings of its predecessor, the Goblet of Fire.
