Invasion of the comic book super-heros

There is also buzz all around Hollyweird that there is a 'Thor' movie in the offing.
And DC has now announced renewed interest in doing Green Lantern...AGAIN. GL has been talked about for at least the past decade, if not longer...but kept getting shelved, as it was felt the FX just weren't feasible...until now.

I think Transformers might prove to be a bust, since it's based on a toy, and therefore lacks the huge base enjoyed by the comic book derivatives.

But Iron Man, if it has a decent plot, and with Robert Downey Jr. in the title role, could be HUGE, maybe reaching even the dizzying box office numbers of the Spidey flicks.

Same for Wonder Woman. If it's too cheesy (like the TV show was), it'll bomb. But if they keep it feeling 'real', like the X-men and FF strived for, it could go bigger than Lara Croft.

Bah, if only the movie industry would slow down and take a half-heartbeat to ponder why some of their superhero movies absolutely suck (FF4, DD, Ghost Rider, etc ad nauseum) and some are positively awesome (Superman, The Crow, Blade, Batman), then there might be a distant future that holds some hope for comic fans and not 'movie goers who have heard something about a comic book'.

But such is not to be: most all movies are made purely to make money. If they happen to entertain people or give the audience the feeling that they got something of value for their money, so much the better ... they'll come see the sequel! Considering how creatively bankrupt movie-dom has become, it is not surprising that they turn to comics to slurp out some more ideas. Depressing, but not surprising because they need Big Names to capture attention.

It's definitely not easy to cater to the general public and still be accurate for us purists. But the point is that you only have to be 'accurate enough' and it would be nice if I didn't have to be afraid of a movie's script simply because I am one. =(
