Robert Rodriguez takes Barbarella

Variety is reporting that helmer Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids, Sin City) has accepted a remake of the 60’s sci-fi flick Barbarella.

To be produced by Universal, and scripted by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (Casino Royale), producer Dino De Laurentis said of the femme centric film: "In our vision, the future is female, and I can't wait to introduce Barbarella to a new generation of moviegoers."The 1968 version of Barbarella, starred Jane Fonda and was based on a French comic written and illustrated by Jean-Claude Forest. "I love this iconic character and all that she represents, and I'm truly excited by the challenge of inviting a new audience into her universe," Rodriguez told Variety. Barbarella is set for a 2008 release.
