Quick quiz (Americans only may know answer): Who said (this is the abbreviated form, he actually gave a longer speech which was not recorded) “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country? Question two, What date was this man hanged for being a spy by the British? Question three – ok, ok I know. This is a movie page not a history page.
Nathan Hale statue at Yale University
But, if you said Nathan Hale was hanged on September 22, 1776 – you are correct.
Now, Warner Bros. Pictures and Barry Josephson’s, Josephson Entertainment will bring M Williams Phelps’ novel “For the Sake of Liberty: America’s First Spy” to the big screen. Book will publish this fall.
In September 1776, Hale volunteered for an espionage assignment authorized by General George Washington. Disguising himself as a Dutch merchant, Hale sneaked onto the island of Manhattan, which had been captured by the British, to assess troop movement. He was captured and sentenced to hang.
A statue of Hale sits on the grounds of the CIA in Langley, Virginia.
Producers are looking to develop a spy thriller using Revolutionary times as the backdrop.
