If it isn’t enough that Tom Cruise survives several Mission Impossibles, and Bryan Singer reinvented Superman, they will both now team up for an untitled World War II movie trying to assassinate Adolf Hitler.

Cruises’ UA studio will produce and MGM will distribute the thriller based on an actual conspiracy plot developed by German generals who believed Hitler needed to die in order to make peace with the Allies and stave off a Soviet invasion. The coup was a failure, however, the Gestapo rounded up anyone even faintly involved and executed many of them.
Singer tapped to direct became intrigued by the notion of Cruise as central figure in the story and offered him the role. Cruise accepted on Tuesday.
The Hitler film is the second movie United Artists has greenlit for production - the first, ‘Lions for Lambs,’ teams Cruise with Robert Redford and Meryl Streep in an Afghanistan war drama set for release on Nov. 9.
"After reading the (Hitler) script, Tom and I knew immediately that this was a film that we had to make," UA partner Paula Wagner said in a statement to the trades. "As an added bonus, because of Bryan Singer's involvement and Tom's admiration for him as a filmmaker, as well as the excellence of the script, the project attracted Tom as an actor. I cannot think of a more perfect combination of creative elements for our second production."
Production on the Hitler flic is scheduled to begin early this summer.
M&C earlier reported that Cruise and Wagner are also in talks with Francis Ford Coppola about acquiring ‘Youth Without Youth’, his first film since 1997's ‘The Rainmaker.’
