Actor Eddie Murphy is currently the whispered favorite to win an Oscar for his role in “Dreamgirls.” Several key sources and trades allege “Norbit” may hurt his chances.
Voting is underway and some experts think that timing on release of the movie is way off. The Los Angeles Times reports that one Oscar consultant said, “I think his performance in ‘Dreamgirls’ is so fabulous” and deserves to win the Academy Award. But, he added, Murphy’s latest comedy offering “doesn’t help.”
CNN today did a report that contends there is fallout from Norbit, and is under fire for portraying racial and weight stereotypes. Some black women are outraged at the portrayal of a grossly fat black women in a humorous setting.
Eddie plays characters from a fat, black, uneducated woman to a stereotypical Asian man. CNN reports that activists think it’s in poor taste, especially since it’s Black History Month.
The premise of Norbit is in a similar vein as the "Nutty Professor," and actor Martin Lawrence told the CNN anchors that these movies simply "sell" in defending why they are made.
